A State of the Woodshop Address...

The phone has been ringing, with people asking when the shop is going to reopen.

I wish I had answers for everyone, but in the words of Sergeant Schultz - I know nothing!

Here's what I do know...now's the time to catch up on all of those home projects I put off, claiming "I don't have time."

It's Spring here - and going to be in the 80s next week, perfect for getting some plants in the ground, or getting the yard in shape.

My studio at home has been neglected for too long - and I've been getting the kilns back in shape, for some future firings. Did you know that I enjoy working with clay almost more than I enjoy building furniture?

I used to make a ton of sushi dinnerware sets... like these.

Complete with sake pitchers and cups.

Or just single platters.

Or tea sets with a serving trays.

But I realized that I like making tile more than anything.

I spent a few years experimenting with texture, and how the various glazes behaved on the surfaces.

Finally - I figured out a way to integrate tile into my furniture.

With a little carving thrown in, for good measure.

If I had one wish for everyone going stir crazy at home - it would be that you try something new.

Carving?

It doesn't take much - maybe a pocketknife and a soft piece of wood.

How about spoon carving?

If you're really desperate - grab a paring knife and bar of soap!

The point is - don't let this down time go to waste!

We'll be back in the classroom making sawdust soon enough, so keep your chin up, and keep creating!
